Best Things to do in Auckland at Night

For convenience, I’ve grouped this list into sections, including family-friendly activities and suggestions for couples. There is some overlap between the different sections though, so it’s worth scanning them all so you don’t miss a thing.

Once you’ve got your night planned, take a look at these top areas to stay in Auckland, the best Auckland tours and how many days to spend in Auckland to help you plan the perfect getaway. Whether you have one day in Auckland or a whole week we’ve got you covered.

1. Visit Sky Tower

As the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere, the 360-degree views from the observation deck at the top of the Sky Tower are petty spectacular. For $10 NZD extra you can go up the Sky Tower twice. This way you can see the stunning views during the day and then come back at night to see the city all lit up.

If you have a few days in Auckland, you don’t even have to go back on the same day. The additional visit is good for up to 72 hours of your first visit.

You can buy your tickets online and it will give you the option to add an additional visit once you make your selection or ask for the deal in person at the Sky Tower ticket counter.

2. Go To The Night Markets

Auckland Night Markets offer an incredible selection of food from all around the world in a fun and casual atmosphere. You can sample everything from Hawaiian BBQ to bubble cones. The range of different foods to try seems endless and I highly recommend wearing your stretchy pants.

Amongst the food stalls you’ll find local artists selling unique handcrafted jewelry, fashion and art, and there is often live music or entertainment.

Night Markets are held in a different location each day of the week. You can find a list of current locations on the Night Markets website. We particularly like the Night Markets held in Silo Park on Sunday evenings.

3. Check Out a Comedy Club

If you’re in the mood for a laugh, The Classic Comedy Club is my go to venue for stand-up comedy.

It’s one of the most popular comedy clubs in the city, featuring local and international comedians. They are fully licensed and have a snack menu for a light meal. Seating is first in, first to the front so if you want to be near the stage then I recommend arriving early.

Ticket prices vary depending on the show. You can see the line up and purchase tickets at Eventfinda.co.nz

Location: 321 Queen Street, Auckland CBD

4. Listen to Live Music

If you’re looking for a night of live music, you’ll find all sorts of venues and genres. From dive bars to wine bars offering rock, jazz, indie and classical – the city caters for many tastes.

Various bars around the city host live music events throughout the week including a jukebox band at The Lula Inn, Champagne and Opera at Bellini Bar, cocktails and jazz at Caretaker and upbeat bands at The Occidental and Danny Doolan’s has live music every night.

For a relaxed concert experience, The Candlelight Music Series is hosted inside Saint Matthew in the City Church, featuring music from different eras. It’s an intimate setup and ticket prices vary, but most are around the $32-$33 NZD mark.

If you want to check out New Zealand’s local bands and upcoming artists, head to Karangahape Road (K Road). Popular spots include:

  • Anthology Lounge – a wine bar and music venue hidden down some stairs on K Road featuring Jazz nights, album launches and a whole host of gigs.
  • The Thirsty Dog – a local pub with a range of gigs featuring kiwi bands.
  • Whammy Bar – a self proclaimed dive bar showcasing upcoming local artists.

5. See a Show

The Civic, SkyCity Theatre, Herald Theatre and ASB Waterfront Theatre are where you can find top shows by local and international playwrights and dance performances.

However, the Q Theatre is a much-loved local theater focusing on independent performing arts and worth checking out. It’s a more intimate experience and you don’t feel separated from the performers.

Plus, they have a fantastic variety of shows from theater and comedy to cabaret and music. Ticket prices vary depending on the show but start from as little as $25 NZD per person.

6. Kayak Among Bioluminescent Plankton

The Auckland Bioluminescence Kayak Tour is a unique night excursion where you can paddle through dark water that glows from bioluminescent organisms with the movement.

This tour is based in Okura Marine Reserve in Long Bay. With low light pollution and clear water you can sometimes see the fish swimming below you as the water glows.

The best time to see the bioluminescence is from October to April. Basically the warmer the water the better. Tours last for about 2 hours and cost $119 NZD per person.

It’s something that not many people get to experience and one of the coolest things to do in Auckland at night!

7. Watch the Harbour Bridge Light Up

The Auckland Harbour Bridge comes to life at night with a colorful display of lights covering the entire length of the bridge.

You can see the lights every night, usually in a different color each night. On Friday and Saturday nights from sunset to midnight they kick it up a notch with a light and sound show.

There are several locations in the city to see the bridge from including Silo Park, Princes Wharf (outside the Hilton Hotel) and Queens Wharf near The Cloud. But the best place is Westhaven Marina. Drive or walk to the far end of the parking lot for the best views.

8. Try Night Canyoning

Canyoning with AWOL Adventures is a pretty epic thing to do at any time, and at night you can see glowworms speckle the walls of the canyon as you make your descent. Having only your headlamp to light the way makes it all the more thrilling.

The canyons are located in the Waitakere Ranges Rainforest, and transport from the city is available if you don’t have a vehicle. You’ll arrive in time for sunset and then abseil under a waterfall to access the caves.

Tours last for around 5.5 hours including travel time. Pricing starts from $220 NZD per person excluding transport. No experience is needed, you’ll get full instruction and support from experienced guides.

9. Play Game Boards with Cocktails

Enjoy some healthy competition at Dice and Fork, a novelty board game bar near Victoria Park. They have over 140 board games you can play while you eat. They do killer cocktails too!

The menu has a variety of comfort food, including burgers, bites and desserts, craft beer and wine. The games are free to play when you purchase food and/or drink.

They also host Quiz Nights and other events. They’re open every day except Monday. You can find event details and opening hours on the Dice and Fork website.

10. Scare Yourself at Spookers

Spookers is an immersive haunted attraction including haunted houses and scare mazes designed to scare the pants off you. The elaborate sets, special effects, and intense soundscapes create an environment that is guaranteed to make you jump, scream and probably swear.

As if that isn’t enough, it’s set on the grounds of a former psychiatric hospital. It’s a popular attraction for teenagers but I’ve seen adults walk out in a cold sweat, uncomfortably impressed with how good it was.

It’s open on Friday and Saturday nights, and the whole experience takes around 90 minutes. There may be a line to get in, but you’ll be well entertained while you wait.

They cater scare levels for different age groups. Tickets range from $25 NZD for R8s (8+years) to $65 NZD for R18s. It’s a fun option for thrill-seekers, horror enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a spine-tingling night out in Auckland.

Holey Moley is a fun bar with an indoor mini-golf course located in Auckland’s Viaduct. They have a range of grown-up themed courses, and you can choose from 9, 18 or 27 holes.

Minors can join until 7pm, but after that it’s adults only. They have a full licensed bar and you can take your drinks around with you as you play.

We like to make it a friendly competition, the lowest score pays for the next round! Prices start from $18 NZD per adult for 9 holes and they are open every night until at least 10pm.

If you’re feeling lucky, head to the SkyCity Casino for a night of responsible gambling and entertainment.

The casino is open all night and has over 2,100 gaming machines and 150 table games, as well as several bars and restaurants.

To be honest, I’m not very skilled or lucky at casino games and haven’t been here for years. So I can’t give more detail on the gaming side of things. But the SkyCity Complex as a whole has a fun vibe at night, even if you choose not to gamble.

13. Electric Bike Tour of Auckland City Lights

A nighttime E-bike tour around the city is a great way to see the famous landmarks and discover the hidden installations that light up at night.

The tour meets at the Park Hyatt Auckland on Halsey Street. A local guide will lead you along cycleways and quiet streets to all the best vantage points. Plus, you’ll get to ride on the Lightpath, or the pink carpet, as I like to call it.

You’ll be provided with a helmet and headset so you can listen to commentary of the areas and sights as you ride.

The tour runs for 1.5 hours and costs $115 NZD per person. Groups are limited to 4 people and you’ll need to book your spot in advance. You don’t want to miss this unique and fun way to see the city at night.

14. Visit a Karaoke Bar

Auckland has a vibrant and diverse karaoke scene catering to a wide range of musical tastes and preferences. They have extensive song selections, state-of-the-art sound systems, and often private karaoke rooms.

Popular karaoke venues in the city include:

  • ACE KTV Karaoke Bar on Wyndham Street where you unleash your inner superstar.
  • Luxury Karaoke on Queen Street which has an extensive collection of English, Korean, Vietnamese, and Japanese songs to belt out.
  • Coin Singing Booths – private karaoke booths right in Chancery Square that you can jump in and sing a tune or two.

You can also find karaoke rooms in bars such as Moley Moley in the Viaduct and entertainment centers like Sky World on Queen Street.

15. Bars and Nightlife

Auckland has plenty of choices when it comes to bars and nightclubs, from classy cocktail bars to underground dive bars. Many of the bars get busier with the younger crowd later in the evening, especially during the weekend, and a cover charge may apply after 10pm.

Viaduct Harbour is the main area for ‘going out’ in the city center with a lively atmosphere and stunning waterfront views. Popular bars include HQ for a local vibe, Dr Rudis for craft beer and bowling, and Danny Doolans for their lively Irish pub experience and live music.

Britomart is another precinct for upscale restaurants and bars. Bar Non Solo has DJs on Friday nights and The Brit has live sports and pool tables. Or try the Caretaker for an underground cocktail bar with a New York vibe.

Check out The Occidental on Vulcan Lane for a local pub atmosphere. The Roxy, located above the Roxy Theatre on Fort Street, is a multi-level dance club with a rooftop garden. And Everybody’s is a local favorite and hidden-gem located below the Roxy.

Ponsonby is another local hotspot with trendy bars and a vibrant atmosphere. Just walk up Ponsonby Road and you’ll be spoiled for choice. A few of my favs include ACS, a secret late-night cocktail bar that you’ll need a password to get into. Check out their Insta for clues. Cafe Thirty Nine for a New Orleans speakeasy vibe and Deadshot for tailored cocktails in an intimate and moody atmosphere.

If you’re looking for a late-late night on the wild side, make your way to Karangahape Road (K’ Road). This eclectic neighborhood parties well into the early morning with bars, strip clubs and late night dancing. There is generally a strong police presence, but you’ll want to stay vigilant. Here are some popular K’ Road Bars:

  • Sly Bar for a prohibition style atmosphere oozing with character
  • Whammy Bar is a self proclaimed dive bar
  • Caluzzi Cabaret for a drag queens show and all-round fabulousness
  • Bozo Bar for gin and craft beer with a laid back vibe.
  • Family Nightclub is the city’s largest LGBTQI+ nightclub

Escape rooms are an ideal activity for families and small groups where you can work together to solve puzzles, find clues and escape the room. The rooms come in a range of themes, each with a unique storyline and set of puzzles to solve within a set time, usually 45 minutes to 1 hour.

We like Escapade NZ on Victoria Street. They are open until 10pm on most nights and have a selection rooms designed to be equally challenging. The Bach, set in a Kiwiana beach house with a message from Gran, is ideal for families and first timers.

Price is based on the number of players. Basically, the more people the less you pay per person. They also have family passes. You can see all the price options and family deals on the Escapade NZ website.

18. Go Skiing at Snowplanet

‘Go skiing’ is a phrase I never thought I’d associate with Auckland, but you heard right! Auckland has its very own indoor snow park.

It’s open all year, regardless of the season or weather, and has a variety of runs and terrain parks for skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing. To keep it simple, you can rent anything you need from equipment to clothing right on site.

23. Hunt for Glowworms at Auckland Domain

You don’t have to go to Waitomo to see Glowworms  (although I highly recommend you do). You can find them right here in Auckland.

An easy place to see them is the Lovers Walk in Auckland Domain. It’s a short walk through the forest alongside a stream. The perfect environment for these shiny little insects, so keep your eyes peeled for their glowing larvae.

Although the Waitomo Caves and Te Anau caves are the best places to see glowworms in abundance, it’s fun for kids to hunt for them on their own. See how many you can find!

24. Giapo for Dessert

Giapo takes the good old ice cream cone to a whole new level. Their handmade ice cream comes in a variety of traditional and unique flavors.

It’s alway fun to see what unconventional flavors they’ve come up with. I haven’t had a bad flavor yet!

You can pick from a variety of bases and toppings and they will craft your ice cream into a work of art. It’s over the top and Instagram worthy in the best way. A fun treat for the whole family.

25. Watch a Movie Under the Stars

Experience an open-air cinema at one of Auckland’s green spaces for a fun movie-watching experience under the night sky. The best thing is, it’s completely free to watch. But bring some cash for the yummy food trucks on site.

Silo Park is a precinct near the Auckland waterfront that was once used for bulk chemical storage. Now it’s a thriving waterfront neighborhood that hosts an open-air cinema during the summer months. It’s our preferred spot for an outdoor movie night.

They play a diverse range of family friendly movies from classics to new releases that are projected onto one of the giant silos. Just bring along a blanket, grab some snacks from the food trucks and enjoy.

Keep an eye on the Silo Park Facebook page for movie and event details.

Auckland has some fantastic bars that have an intimate setting and sophisticated drinks menu.

27. Watch Sunset at Mount Eden

Mount Eden is a grass covered dormant volcano located in the suburb by the same name. The Mount Eden Summit is the highest natural point in Auckland where you can see stunning 360-degree views of the city and the harbor.

There are two visitor parking lots near the main entrance on Puhi Huia Road. From here, its a 20-30 minute walk to the summit.

Arrive an hour before sunset, find yourself a comfortable spot, and watch as the sky transitions through a breathtaking palette of colors. It’s usually top of the list of places to see in Auckland for first time visitors, and locals know it’s the magic spot for sunset.

You’ll sail around the harbor with live commentary pointing out the highlights of the city as you sail past, followed by a delicious 3-course meal. Then after dinner, you’ll get to see the city skyline at sunset and then Auckland’s iconic landmarks light up for the night.

I like this Auckland Harbour Dinner Cruise, which lasts 2.5 hours and costs $160.00 NZD per adult. Meeting point is in the Viaduct. It’s a great way to mark your time in Auckland and see the city from a different perspective.

At any time, you’ll find up to ten varieties of oysters, freshly shucked and prepared to go with their succulent steak. Combined with their extensive cocktail menu, including champagne by the bottle, it is the perfect venue for a romantic evening.
