If you’re looking for the best New Zealand South Island tours to book, you’re in the right place.
A common question I see in social media groups about planning a NZ trip is how to see NZ without a car. A lot of responses insist the best way to see New Zealand is to hire a car or campervan.
I get where they’re coming from but it also doesn’t answer the question. Not everyone can drive in New Zealand, whether it’s by choice or any other reason.
I hear you.

When I first moved to New Zealand I had to learn to drive on the other side of the road in a manual car – with hills! I hadn’t even heard of a ‘hill start’ until I was sitting on a steep incline at a red light. Needless to say, it was a quick (and stressful) learning process.
I’ve lived in New Zealand for over twenty years now, and while I’m a confident driver (and most cars are automatic), I still white-knuckle some of the narrow winding mountain passes when road tripping around the South Island.
I want everyone to enjoy their time in New Zealand. To help you navigate this stunning island and see the best spots, these are my top South Island tours.
Navigating the South Island Without a Car
Tours are a great way to enjoy the South Island’s stunning scenery and top places without the hassle of driving long distances and navigating winding mountainous roads. Depending on your time and budget you have a few options for how to cover the South Island without a car.
- Fly or take the Inter-City Bus between the main centers and use day tours to explore the top sights beyond the cities.
- Book a one-way tour like this Queenstown to Christchurch Tour via Mt Cook & Lake Tekapo which gets you between the main centres including stops at popular destinations along the way.
- Consider a private multi-day tour that covers the highlights and allows for flexibility.
I’ve included day tours as well as round trip and one-way multi-day tours from the main cities and towns of Christchurch, Queenstown and Dunedin below. So all you have to do is book and enjoy!
Best New Zealand South Island Tours From Christchurch
Christchurch is known as the “Garden City,” and home to the largest international airport in the South Island. If you plan ahead, you can generally find reasonable fares to Christchurch airport.
You can explore the beautiful Christchurch Botanic Gardens, take a punt ride on the Avon River, and enjoy the lively atmosphere of the city’s cafes and markets.

1. TranzAlpine Train Tour to Arthur’s Pass and Castle Hill

The TranzAlpine Train is often described as one of the world’s most scenic train journeys. We took my mom (mum) on this tour when she came to visit and it was the perfect way to take in the rugged landscapes of the Southern Alps, plus experience two incredible destinations.
Arthur’s Pass is a stunning national park with dramatic alpine scenery, and diverse wildlife. You can explore the walking trails, such as the popular Devil’s Punchbowl Track, which leads to a spectacular waterfall, and the chance to spot the elusive kea, a native mountain parrot.
Castle Hill has these unique limestone formations creating dramatic landscapes and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The large, weathered boulders create an otherworldly atmosphere and it’s a great place to explore the various walking trails.

Travel Planning Guide
🚗 Where should I book my rental car?
Renting a car is one of the best ways to get around New Zealand. Public transportation can only get you so far, even in the cities. I always rent with Discover Cars, which checks the prices of all major rental car companies, so you get the best rates.
🚐 What about a campervan?
Renting a campervan is a fantastic way to experience the more remote areas of New Zealand. I really like JUCY because they have a big range of vehicles and locations around the country, which offers more flexibility with pick-up and drop-off. I also like Motorhome Republic, which compares all the campervan options available in NZ.
🎟 Where should I book my tours?
Tours are a great way to experience New Zealand’s top attractions while learning about the area and culture through local guides. We always use Viator and Get Your Guide to find the best tours.
🛏 What’s the best way to book my accommodations?
For hotels and vacation rentals, Booking.com or Expedia.com are the best sites. You can also book through TripAdvisor. If you’re considering renting a house instead, try VRBO which often has good deals.
🛩 What’s the best site to buy flights to New Zealand?
For finding the best deals on flights to New Zealand from around the world, I recommend Kayak.com.
